Synopsis
The famous American writer Philip Roth based his book partially on his authentic experiences in 1970’s when he used to visit Prague after the Soviet occupation in 1968 in order to help the banned Czechoslovak writers. Social life was rampant in Prague, full of amusement and open relationships, despite the political oppression. The greater pressure of the regime was, the more people would resort to their free private intimate worlds. The story of “The Prague Orgy” depicts the journey of the famous American writer Nathan Zuckerman who arrives in Prague in 1976. He carries out the mission of a Czechoslovak emigrant Sisovsky who asks him to save a unique collection of brilliant tales written in Yiddish by smuggling them across the border. These manuscripts are in the custody of Sisovksy’s ex-wife Olga, an intellectual, unorthodox and eccentric woman, balancing on a knife-edge, who doesn’t want to hand them over to her ex-husband. An
engrossing story unfolds within 48 hours when Nathan strives to get the manuscripts from Olga while she longs for something rather different – she wants him to marry her in order to escape the communist country. After a few chaotic and meetings with Olga, she finally gives up the manuscripts to Nathan for free, just asking him to tell her ex-husband that she did it with pride and didn‘t want anything in return. Nathan returns swiftly to his hotel room, but shortly he is visited by secret police and forced to pack immediately and give away the manuscripts under the threat of imprisonment and physical violence. He is transported to the airport and forced to take the first plane to the West. The heroic savior of Czechoslovak writers ends up failing his mission to retrieve the manuscripts. On the contrary he experienced a new, rather thrilling, story. What more could a writer as for? …
